When you find yourself feeling out of sorts, out of whack, and not able to figure out what to do, then do these 3 steps:

  1. Get on your knees, lean your forehead on a comfy couch cushion, the edge of a bed, or your perfect prayer spot.
  2. Pray to God, and tell him all your concerns. Cast your cares in his hands, and ask for strength to trust that things are working out beautifully. Think of the things you are so thankful for, and think about how you can best take care of those things.
  3. Brainstorm with God, letting yourself freely roam in your mind, to find actions, solutions, or practices you could do to relieve or resolve your burdens. Notice when an idea feels good, do-able, and potentially right. Keep brainstorming with God, until you feel some peace.

Next, take action on one inspired idea. It can be something super easy if that’s all you can muster at the moment.


Once you get yourself in motion, try to stay away from anything that could bring your spirits down.

Trust that you will be guided to a perfect solution, and have patience. You may come across something helpful in the next 5 minutes, and you may be surprised at where the source of guidance comes from – it could be on the radio, the internet, in an email message, from a phone call, or just randomly pop into your heart.

If you find yourself stuck again, or in your head, or pacing around, then acknowledge that you are lost again.

Get back into action – load the dishwasher, tidy up the living room, make your bed, fill a bag for donations, journal, start the dryer, turn on music, pray again. Just distract yourself long enough to get you back into action.

Don’t stop. Keep moving, and have faith that you’re going to know what to do when it’s time to do it.

There’s a time for everything. Maybe right now, it’s simply time to pray.
