A super clean and uncluttered home is a broad common tip given to you over and over again. Let’s break that broad tip down into specific instructions on exactly what to do.

You are about to use your “home for sale” to influence the buyers. How they imagine themselves in this new home will influence how they imagine what their life will be like living there. We want them positively influenced!

My professional experience leads me to share these top 5 tips on how to prep your home for sale:

#1. Remove items from closet floor.

Sweep, vacuum, mop the floor. This instantly creates more spaciousness and makes the closet appear larger. If you have too many items on the closet floor, and must use the floor space, then use containers that are nice and clean. For example, a classy shoe shelf will look great in a closet. Matching containers stacked can look really nice. Open style containers work well too, if they are matching and lined up next to each other neatly.

#2. Clean windowsills. Clean baseboards.

Wipe windowsills. Remove scuff marks from baseboards. Then, do a light sweep on the baseboards to remove floating particles that land there.

#3. Nothing in the corners of the room. Why not?

The corners of each room need space to create a streamlined, open environment. With the exception of a piece of furniture, like the corner of a desk, a chair, or perhaps a plant, nothing else needs to be piled up, leaning into the corner. If you do place anything near the corner of the room, make it look super stylish and clean.

#4. Clear the counters… go minimalistic.

Only high necessity items on the counters – the rule of thumb is no more than 3 items grouped together on a section of the counter, but I can balk at that rule. Just make it look sparkling clean and spacious… keep clean items like a coffee maker, something decorative, or in a bathroom just your pretty morning essentials. Toss what you can.

Remember to clear surfaces in the laundry room!

#5. Pre-pack items you don’t need access to daily.

Place them in a storage facility, your vehicle, or at a friend’s, so that you don’t look too “motivated to sell” risking price drops or lower offers. Donate excess items that you won’t be taking into your new home! You’ll free up more space which will give the potential new homeowner more room to imagine themselves and their belongings fitting into the home.
